What is REScheck?
REScheck is the U.S. Department of Energy's compliance software for residential buildings. It compares the insulation levels and window and door performance in your plans against the requirements of the energy code adopted where you're building, and produces a pass/fail compliance certificate for the building department.
REScheck uses a trade-off approach: if one component falls short, better performance elsewhere — for example, higher-performance windows or extra ceiling insulation — can make up the difference.
How we prepare your REScheck
- Take off wall, ceiling, floor, slab, window and door areas from your plans
- Enter the specified insulation R-values and window U-factors for your climate zone
- Run the compliance check and identify any components that are holding it back
- Recommend the least expensive changes if the design doesn't pass
- Deliver the compliance certificate and inspection checklist as PDFs
REScheck and Manual J work best together
The same envelope data drives both your REScheck and your Manual J load calculation. Doing them together keeps the numbers consistent, so the HVAC is sized for the house that's actually being built — and you avoid permit comments about mismatched assumptions.
