How a duct leakage test works
We seal the registers, connect a calibrated duct leakage tester to the system and pressurize the ductwork to a standard test pressure (25 pascals). The fan flow needed to hold that pressure is the leakage, reported in CFM25.
Depending on what's required, we test total leakage or leakage to the outside, at rough-in or after the home is complete, and compare the result to the limit in the energy code adopted by your jurisdiction.
Why duct leakage matters
- Leakage into attics and crawlspaces can account for a significant share of heating and cooling energy
- Return-side leaks can pull in dust, insulation fibers and attic air
- Leaks rob airflow from the rooms at the end of the duct runs
- Energy codes set maximum leakage for new construction
Testing at rough-in saves money
Testing before drywall lets your HVAC contractor find and seal leaks while the ducts are still accessible. We can locate problem areas during the test so repairs are targeted, then re-test to confirm the system passes.
